1967-1972 Chevrolet Vehicle Serial Number Identification Number

(1967-1972 Model Identification)

All 1967 through 1972 Chevrolet 10 through 30 trucks are identified by this model designation system.  It consist of 7 characters, 2 letters followed by 5 numbers.  The 1st letter identifies the chassis type and the 2nd identifies the engine type.  The 1st number designates the gross vehicle range, the 2nd to 3rd identify the cab to axle dimension, and the last 2 identify the body and brake type.

1st (letter) Chassis Type

C= Conventional 4X2 (Series 10-60),  G= Forward Control 4X2 (Body & Frame Integral), H= Conventional 4X2 (Series 70-80),  J= Conventional 6X4 (Series 70-80), K= Conventional 4X4,  M= Conventional 6X4 (Series 60),  P= Forward Control 4X2 (Conventional),  S= Bus Chassis 4X2,  T= Tilt Cab 4X2

The V.S.N.I.N. numbers are located on the the inside of the glove box door and on the driver's side rear door pillar tag.

1st (letter) indicates: Chassis Type

1= 3900-5800,  2= 5200-7500,  3= 6600-14,000,  4= 13,500-18,000,  5=15,000-30,000,  6= 19,000-45,000,  7= 21,000-44,500,  8= 23,000-48,500

4th (number): Model Type     

2= Chassis, Cowl, Bus,  3= Chassis, Cab,  4= Pickup,  5= Panel,  6= Carryall

5th (number): Model Year

7= 1967,  8= 1968,  9= 1969,  0= 1970,  1= 1971,  2= 1972

6th (letter): Assembly Plant 

A= Atlanta,  B= Baltimore,  F= Flint,  Z= Freemont,  J= Janesville,  N= Norwood,  P= Pontiac,  S= St. Louis,  T= Tarrytown,  1= Oshawa

7th thru 12th (numbers) Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N) 

The number that your truck came off the assembly line. (Begins at 100,001 at each assembly plant.)  

The example above would be a 1968 2 wheel drive, Chevy Pickup, with a V-8 Gasoline engine, that was built in Flint, Michigan and was the 43rd one off the assembly line.
