Rear End replacement 1970 C20 3/4 ton

I am thinking about switching my C20 from 8 lug low geared rear end to 5 lug High way gears for better mileage. Any Ideas if it can be done. An if there is a 5 lug out there for it
thanks

yes should be a relatively easy swap...just get a matching 1/2 ton rear end...by matching i mean coil VS leaf springs...i would think the u-joint size would be different, also the length of the rear driveline should change?...brake lines should hook up and that should be it....

Make sure you get the correct gear ratio to get the milage you are looking for.

You probably have 4.11 gears like I do now. There are some 3.55 8 lug rear ends floating around. One of the guys close to you used to have one for coil springs for sale on here. I haven't seen him on the board for quite a while and that was in Augest.

If you are cruising the wrecking yards for a 5 lug rear end check the automatic trans rigs that didn't show to have heavy duty suspension. And make sure of the gear ratio before you buy or go to the work of pulling it out.

He's in Parkland. I was by there in Augest but don't know if he still has any of the truck stuff and I don't know if he watches the board anymore.

FYI 3.55 wasnt a gm ratio

but was in some dana axles

3.73 and 4.11 and 4.56 was in the 3/4 tons 72 older

if its a leaf rear you have many options

you could just get a 3.73 axle from either a 72 older or a 73-up 14 FF because the leaf spring pack spacing is the same 42.5"

putting a 1/2 ton axle under it can happen only if yours is leaf type rear

otherwise if you have coil rear then you would have to do welding and put trailing arm brackets onto the rear youre putting under the truck

best way to go would be either to get and lvie with 3.73

or find a 1/2 ton truck or at least entire rolling chassis and put your truck on that

good luck
