License plate light wiring

I installed a new rear bumper about 12 years ago, but never hooked up the lights for the license plate that came with the bumper. Each light has a single lead. I dug out my wiring diagrams and have been trying to figure out how and where to splice them in. I believe the existing harness has only one wire for a single plate lamp. Do I just splice into that wire and the bumper will be the ground to complete the circuit? I'm electrically challenged to say the least. Thanks, Chumley
