The steering gears are all the same from 69-78. After 1978 the gear will still bolt in and will be a quicker ratio, but you need to make sure that you take the rag joint assembly also. The input shaft is smaller in diameter so yours will not work with it. 1982 to 1987 will bolt on, and also will be a quicker ratio, they use the same rag joint assembly as the 78-81, but they go to metric fittings on the steering gear for the power steering hoses. Not a problem, you just need to have hoses made up for it. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

O ring hose fittings started in 80

flare fittings ended in 79

you dont have to have hoses made up

just swap the fitting on pump backside for the other and the hoses too

also any 88-91 2wd blazers and 1 tons you can use the box from too(old body style)

i assume your 71 is a 2wd, you didnt say

but the only difference is the sector shaft anyways

can swap them

Okay...

So I have a 4WD 1972 Blazer which I am not too crazy about it's sloppy steering. The steering gear seems to be shot. I would like to convert to a variable steering gear so I won't have to turn the wheel 4 times to park. So I should try to find a 78-81 steering gear to avoid changing fittings on the steering gear. Just make sure I get a rag joint to connect from the steering wheel shaft to the steering gear. Wes, do you have any 78-81 steering gears and rag joints?
