New guy here

Hey all, I've decided I need a new project. Looking for a 55-56 3100 shortbox. I've always loved these trucks, and decided it's time I get one. Half the fun in owning something cool, is to fix it up. So I'm not looking for a truck that is already done, but at the same time, I'm not looking for a rotten basket case either. If ya see anything, let me know! (I don't mind the 57 either, I just prefer the grille that is in the 55-56).

Thanx,
Trevor

Welcome to our little spot on the web. There have been a few of these era trucks pop up from time to time. I had a guy stop by our shop last weak trying to sell me one. I told him to place it on our message boards and he might be able to sell it that way. I haven't seen it pop up yet, but that doesn't mean that it wont. I will keep my eyes open for you around here, and maybe the guy will come back. WES

Bill, thanks but that is a little far to travel. LOL

Wes, I'll keep my eye open.

I found one on craigslist. It was a 56. Guy said that all the body work was done, and it was ready for paint. He had too many of these, so he had to sell one. He had all parts and pieces except for the grill. It had a camaro clip, and the rearend out of same camaro. So I drive 2.5 hours down to look at (and hopefully buy) it. First thing I notice is that the door hinge pockets are horrible. The passenger side lower is almost completely gone. Even the lower part of the a pillar was gone!! Then I notice that the sub frame is welded on really crooked. The front of the frame had been cut too short as well. Then while looking at the rotten floors, rotten cab mouts, rotten steps, etc, I happen to look up. That is when I saw it. I huge hole in the roof!!! Turned out, a tree had fallen on this thing. Instead of cutting the top off, he figured he could get rid of most of the damage by putting in a sun roof. Well, he says it was a sunroof, but it looked like it was a side window for an RV trailer or something. Didn't open, didn't slide, and the "chrome" trim ring looked straight out of the 70's. This was one of the worst hack job POS I have seen in a long time. The guy couldn't believe I drove all that way and wasn't gonna buy it!!

Just so no one else runs into the same problem, this thing is in Federal Way. He has 3 different ads for it on CL. All the adds have at least one really blurry pic of the front sub frame. One ad says it is $700. One ad says it is $1000 (but the title of add says $2.00), and the third ad says $150 for rolling chassis and cab and bed (once again, the title of the ad says $2.00). This thing is NOT even worth $2.00 LOL Actually, the hood was FABULOUS! The left front fender was really good, and the right rear fender was really good. Driver rear fender was good, but it has the "indent" for the spare tire.

Anyway, the hunt continues!

Thanx man. If you're friend wants to get rid of his, that'd be great. I prefer them without motor and tranny too. I like your build you've got going right now. I'm going for something similar. At first I was gonna use a 73-86 chev shortbox frame cause the wheelbase is only a couple of inches too long. The more I think about it though, I will either use a stock frame and make new crossmembers, spring hangers, shackle mounts, steering box mount etc. or just build myself a new frame out of some box tube. Either way, I am also looking for a chev truck or blazer for cheap to get my axles, suspension, steering box, etc.

I guess I didn't mention in the first post that I'm actually looking for a chev, not a GMC. I prefer the dash/cluster in the chevy.

One of my friends did this Trans Am subframe on a tri 5 frame and I think he may have it for sale and may have the whole truck.

Truck in a basket deal. I'll check with him tomorrow or Monday and see what the deal on it is. He was working on it for someone and last I heard he was probably going to end up with it.
He has done about 25 of those subframe jobs and has it down pretty well.
I have no idea of what he would want for it though.

And welcome to the board by the way, I shouldn't be telling you about a truck even if it isn't mine before saying welcome.
