How hard is it , to put the power steering on the truck? I also have a 69 GMC,swb and was just wondering if it was a job I could tackle.

I'm the wrong one to be asking this. I'm good at taking things a part but I'm not really a mechanic. I know you will need the steering box (I don't have)and may have to change your pulleys out. Why don't you ask the general members. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this board. Thanks-Pat

Squaw,
The power steering swap is fairly easy. I performed it on my '68 in a couple of hours. Do a little research and a lot of looking at rigs with power steering to get an idea of belt routing and bracket installation. Try to find the brackets(don't forget details like the one that clamps the metal lines to the frame rail) and bolts, etc. at a salvage yard and a good power steering box.(new ones are expensive so you may want to go used---a discerning eye should be able to find a good used one). Many year model boxes will fit from '68 on up to about '86. I know 1/2 and 3/4 ton midels are the same and maybe 1 ton, too. I would suggest buying new hoses and pump. Your left bumper bracket will have to be modified or replaced. I had a friend of mine use a plasma cutter and cut out a notch in mine. The main thing is to do a little research first if you've never done a job like this before. Look at a similar model and even take a polaroid if you need to(this has saved me alot of aggrivation). Sure hope this helps!!

Old GMC, I have owned a poloroid for years, and it NEVER did occur to me to use it as you have suggested. WOW, what an idea! Thanks, steve
