This is interesting...
Seems everyone I have spoken to about the caddy engine says that you either have to gat an engine filter relocation kit, or do this;
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/attachment.php3?s=&postid=130756
Here is the interesting part. I have the 425 hanging from the hoist as I type this and bolted to the tranny, (unmoved) The drivers side valve cover is just barely touching the firewall by the clutch hole, sitting down in the frame rails further down that it will end up, yet my filter does not need moved. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/images/smilies/confused.gif
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/attachment.php3?s=&postid=141595
Also, I found that i won't have to do this; http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/attachment.php3?s=&postid=141597
(the cutting) to run my pipes.
I am able to tuck it all in like this;
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/attachment.php3?s=&postid=141598
And this;
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/attachment.php3?s=&postid=141599
The drivers side does have a nub on the manifold that needs grinded off, and the brake lines are also touching the manifold, so they'll need moved too, but so far it's looking pretty good. Here is a pic of the valve cover touching teh fire wall, which brings up another thread all together.

Wow! I'm impressed, helluva job. I could not do that. I take it that you're just trying it on for size that it's not yet in there for good. So what is that notch (for the filter) cut in if you didn't have to cut the longhorn?

Amazing, I'd nver try it, but want to know how it comes out. Personally you're boldly going where most of us would not have the courage to venture. What's next?

Sams_71, Thanks for the compliment. I'm just test fitting it at the moment. I need to take the left side motor mount tower in to work and cut a notch out of it. I also still have alot of cleaning and painting to do too. I got the engine mostly painted after the pics were taken, but it is too dark for pictures. Also still have the frame rails to clean and paint. The hacked up frame you see is one of Pro-Truck's rides. I tooka road trip up to Michigan to see him and he gave me a '71 Caddy 472 and TH400 (blown up motor) that was in a Suburban he has. Those pictures show how the last guy did the install. Really kinda sick looking at how smooth mine is going. But if you don't have the right combo of parts, that is what happens. I'm just getting VERY lucky here.

Dale, I've always liked the Caddy engines, and never had the chance to do it. Since this is not a driver yet, and the engine that I was planning on putting has a top end cam, and not a low end grunt type power band, and honestly, I'm sick of it on the street. So when I came across this engine locally for $100, it took me all of 2 seconds for my project plans to take a whole differant route.
If anyone ever wants to do something completely differant, I say go for it. BUT, do your homework first. I've researched this to death and think I got the info i need to get it right.
Whats next you ask? Finish it up, sell the GMC turd (onless this good paying job calls me...then I'll keep them both) and drive the wheels off of her! http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey Longhorn I know where you can get a front cross piece that's pre cut just like the one in the picture. Let me know LOL Why can't you run a remote oil filter?

Longhorn,
Great pics and great progress! Looks like you are well on your way to having your "Longilac." Or will it be a "Caddyhorn?" http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/wink.gif
I'm sure you've already considered these comments but can you remove the oil filter in that position? Also, with such a tight fit on the exhaust manifolds, is there enough room for the engine to "torque over" when you mash the accelerator?
LOL and keep us posted!
Kent

PRO TRUCKS...LOL! I don't want to run a remote if I don' have to, if things keep going the way they are (which are going great in reality) then I won't need to worry about it. I can reach up from underneath and twist it off no problem. The angle makes it look bed, but it is quite cool how it fits in there.

fatfords, While at the timne I set it in there, I had not thought of it, but it was brought to my attention. I think I have found aa way to do it and not have any trouble with torque movement. I wish i could find some poluu mounts for it, but I am not holding my breath on that.

Wow..I guess summer is pretty much over huh? Maaannn, seems like it just started. http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/frown.gif I hate it when the white stuff starts to fly.
Being that my wife just got laid off from her job, and has not gotten a call from any of the places she has been loking into, I'll have to say come spring time, I'll be headed in that direction.

Here is what the little 425 is looking like as as last night. I had to use the hoist to pick up the (40 pound) intake straight up. The steel vally pan is also a reusable gasket if you don't damage it upon removal, and this was the best way to keep from damaging it.
http://64.246.42.114/vboard/attachment.php3?s=&postid=145510
you can see the 472's intake sitting in the background in the grass. I had to shoot it silver becouse i ran out of the GM corp "pastel" blue, and wasn't going to buy a can JUST for a intake. Besides, it makes it look faster. http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/wink.gif
Considering this pig motor has over 100,000 miles on it, i was pretty impressed at the sludge factor.
http://64.246.42.114/vboard/attachment.php3?s=&postid=145368
I am also using another set of valve covers from that 472 I picked up at pro trucks house, they are now painted, but not before degreasing and sand blasting them.They look great, and don't have that goofy breather deal on there that looks all stupid.
