what if i tell everyone that i'm about to get a complete 55 chevy 1st series 3/4 ton that has not seen sunshine in 41 years. thats right ,41 years . the original owner still has it in the barn since 1966 when he purchased a new truck. It has chrome grille, bumpers, and hubcaps still on the truck . still has the 261 straight six and four speed tranny. complete down to the old battery. just drove it in there and parked it. now for the question? does it have 6 volt or 12 volt? i heard all 55's had 12 volt

Did he say why he left it in there? It sounds like you have a great find.

I am pretty sure that the 1st series is 6v. With the battery still in place all you have to do is look at it. 3 caps on the cells = 6V. Some guys did put in 8V batteries to help the cars/trucks start a bit easier and have brighter lights. My former stepfather was thinking of doing that on his 54 half ton.

The second series and later were 12V.

It is possible but doubtful that the original owner changed the truck over to 12 v at one time.
