Hang onto your Corvairs people, they are about to gain value. General Motors announced at the Detroit Auto Show they are bringing back the Corvair
CHECK THIS OUT! It's one of the biggest stories to come out of Detroit in years! General Motors announced at the 2007 Motor City Autorama that Chevrolet will re-introduce the Corvair name as early as the 2009 model year. In a lavish, highly-publicized ceremony attended by all the big GM execs and unveiled before a worldwide media, the totally re-designed 2-seat, rear-engine model will be “a technical marvel in the true pioneer spirit of the Corvair brand” while retaining many of Corvairs original features like twin horizontal headlamps, grill & body emblems, unibody construction, and dual tail lamps. Check out the lines - this thing is SWEEET! The all-new Corvair will be powered by an air-cooled supercharged flat-six engine generating 265 HP @ 5,500 RPM and available in a 5-speed Techtronic AT or 6-speed manual transmission. One unnamed GM exec commented that “The Corvair suffered an unfortunate and unnecessary demise, and GM is overdue in acknowledging Corvair's legacy, popularity, and heritage. The unveiling of this new Corvair model coincides with the 50th anniversary of it's original debut back in 1959, and we couldn’t be more excited.” The rep also noted that an updated forward-control crossover SUV is already in the design stages. On a lighter note, another design rep jokingly stated that “Corvair’s back seat was never that comfortable to begin with, so this new 2-seat sports-car version is a natural evolution for one of Chevy’s most beloved marques.” Price information was not yet available, but the new high-performance Spyder edition is expected to be competitive with GM’s similar Saturn & Pontiac 2-seat performance cars. All I can say is, it's about time, and old Ralphie is probably already preparing an updated version of what will undoudtedly be his newest cause! Can't wait for the Road Test reports in some upcoming car mags. In the meantime, you can say you heard it here first!
