Okay, I'm probably just stupid, but I've put on 3 new grommets so far on the fuel filler neck of my '72 and on all of them the rubber around the widest part has split and torn. Is the small diameter part of the grommet supposed to fit around that fat part of the neck, or does it tuck underneath? I didn't pay attention when I took the original, cruddy looking one off. I have one more on hand since I bought two last time just for this very problem. Yesterday on my job I came across 3 '72's to look at, but they were all shot so I couldn't see how it's supposed to go. Please advise, thanks....

Does anyone scroll down this far back?

Chumley,
The wide part of the grommet has a groove in it that fits on either side of the sheet metal on the cab. The smaller part of the grommet goes out. Makes me wonder about your filler neck. I'm not a great mechanic, but mine fit without tearing, then again I put the grommet in the sun for awhile to make sure it was soft and pliable. I had the same question when I started putting the tank in, but it proved to be a simple fit. Good luck!

Do you have a '72? I guess what I'm asking is, Doe's the small part go around the widest(top) part of the neck, or just underneath. I pushed this part down and it seems more at home there. Other trucks I've seen seem to have it this way also ( at least the few that have any rubber left at all!) Thanks...
