View Full Version : 68 tilt column
Hello Gents,
I recall hearing that 70's & 80's chevrolet van tilt columns will work in the 67-72's chevy trucks. Is this true. I'd like to put tilt in my 68 short box. Thanks for your input, Glen
Well first let me welcome you to our boards. We hope you get lots of enjoyment from them. As for your question, the answer is yes a van tilt column will work in your 68. What you will need to do is to drill out the nylon sheer pins in the lower steering shaft, then smack it with a hammer to shorten it. If you want to use the nutral safety switch it will have to be relocated to near the bottom of the column. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com (http://www.ClassicHeartbeat.com)
Hi Wes,
Thanks for the welcome aboard. That's good news the van tilt will fit. The chevy parts van is a 78 or 79, not sure. Other than removing the sheer pins and shortening it, is everything a bolt-up?. I guess the amount it requires to be shortened will be self explanatory during install. Is anything required to do the job of the nylon sheer pins that will be removed? Thanks, Glen

I just slammed the end of mine onto the pavement to colaps mine.
You will probably need to get an adapter for the harness too. It's like 12 bucks or so at the dealer. Just tell them you need the column harness adapter for the old 1/2 moon to the flat style.
If they look confused, tell them to look up a tirn signal switch and the adapter will show up as a needed part for the new switch.
