The anti-dieseling relay I ordered came in the mail Friday so Saturday I did some work on the `71. I had also purchased a new dual-voice speaker for the dash (fits with future stereo plans) but for now I connected the AM radio I got from the salvage yard to it. I can pick up one station! Had to be a little creative with the bracket to get it to fit behind the center A/C vent. All the A/C electrical connections under dash are new, so is the harness and new vacuum valves on the kick pad and under the hood. Salvaged A/C control unit needed a little work to get the levers to slide easily. Plugged it into the fuse box, put the battery back in and fired it up. Had A/C blowing cool air for 2 seconds before somthing blew. http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/frown.gif Still haven't figured out what. I did replace one fuse but that wasn't the problem. Saw that I had the radio plugged into the fuseable ignition plug and the A/C into the radio plug so I switched them around and got the A/C back but no radio. http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/smile.gif So, for now I've got the radio on hot wire with the cigarette lighter. I'll get it straightened out when I change the dash harness and fuse box (can't justify that cost yet) and install the harnesses I've purchased for under the hood. Still have to get the glove box light to work though.
I've got to stop messing around with the convenience stuff now and get serious on the engine. While she was sitting in the garage for about 3 weeks waiting for me to get the time to work on her she leaked a good quart of oil on the floor. I have to decide on a replacement motor. I want to take my time and do a stock rebuild on the original motor for future sale purposes. But, I don't know if I want to save money and buy another old truck I know of and run it's dependable(?) engine, short term, or buy a new high horse power crate and have some fun, long term. What do you think?
Sam
Sounds like you have a plan!! What I tell everyone is to build what you will enjoy. If you are worried about future value as a stock truck, then just don't do anything that isn't reversable. I am taking my 67 panel and setting it on a 72 chassis, installing a BB 396, front and rear air, front and rear sway bars, and lowering it, just to name a few things that I am going to do to it. Some people may not like what I am doing to it, but for one, it's my truck and I am saving all of the old parts and two I am still preserving the truck even though it may not be to stock. Bottom line is I am going to enjoy it and if it isn't what I want it to be, I won't..... So enjoy your truck!! WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com (http://www.ClassicHeartbeat.com)

well i was told that i ruined the value of my truck when i changed the color....buuut...i am the one that is going to be driving her around and enjoying her i i enjoy the bright colors on these old trucks moreso than the factory colors...just my opinion...bottom line is that unless you are planning on fixing her to resell...do with her what --you-- want and not what everyone else thinks is right...Anthony

I finde those statements funny. These aren't old Nicky Camaros, or the one original factory supercharged Shelby GT350, I don't care if you have a big block 50th annv short bed CST...it will never be as valuable as some of these people think.
Would you pay more for a truck that is baby crap green just becouse that is the color someone wanted 30 years ago? I doubt it. You would more likely pay more for the one that used to be some nasty shade, and been properly painted black.
Now granted, my GMC isn't a restoration catidate, however, I didn't think twice about doing the mods for the d.i.n. sized detachable face stereo. True, there are disc chaingers and head units that fit roperly, but have you priced them? the manufacturers price them so high, that the vendors can only mark them up a little bit. Even wholesale they cost more than a decent d.i.n. stereo.

You ever planning on putting the A.M. back in there?
It's just like points and biased ply tires, toss them, you'll never put them back on your truck once you have upgraded them.
Do what you want. Some people will complain, but most of the mods you would do are NOT irreversable. 85% of the trucks getting redone need metal welded on, they can patch up the dash face too. I'm just looking for some doors good enough to cut up for my speakers.

Hey longhorn. Before you cut up the doors...I am working on custom made kick panels that will fit almost any speaker combination you want. Not only will this save the door (just a couple of screws in the kick area), the sound quality should be a lot better!! I too did not think twice about cutting the dash. Welding in a patch is not that hard if I ever decide to sell the truck. (NEVER will happen http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/biggrin.gif )

Hmmm, I'm still looking for doors to call keepers, so I'll holler before hacking. You talking to mount speakers down by the vents? Including 6X9's?
