We have all seen or heard of Pontiacs goin into them or Caddy 500's. I know of a truck that has had a caddy, then an olds... My horniac has a pontiac 350...so what's the senses? Who thinks it's ok to do something like this?
If it is ok to do any of these swaps, why would we all kill some one if they put a ford engine in one...even an old school built like they shoulda been built kickin @ss 427 SOHC Ford. (I'd like to see that personally)
Yes?
No?
Maybe so?

Should never even see the f word on here and my comment on caddy's and pontiacs is "GM"!!!
Gosh darn it longhorn man!!! I spent two hours working on these boards bringing them back up this morning after you mentioned the F**D word on them!!!! and, and, and In the same sentence as the GM products were mentioned in also... Then to top it off you are talking about sticking one of their engines in one of our beloved.... (breath Wes, breeeaaaaath) Trucks!! Thuddd (I just fainted and hit my head on my desk) (I hope you are happy!!) Hahahaha!! Just Kidding!! When it comes right down to it, the truck is yours and you should do with it what makes you happy. After all you are the one who looks and drives it every day. When I work on trucks I make them into what I want them to be and worry a whole lot less than correctness. I am going to put a 72 Suburban frame under my 67 Panel and in a lot of circles that is taboo, but I am the one who is going to drive it and not them. Besides I can restore the 67 frame and put it away, so if some day I want to be correct again I can change it back. I am going to put a Big Block in it also and if I were to try that with the 67 frame I would have to cut a notch to make it fit, seeing how they never made BB trucks in 67. If I were to cut the frame to fit the BB then I couldn't reverce the modification. Anyway the point is it your truck so do what makes you happy!! http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/smile.gif Don't worry about what someone else thinks. If they don't like it they can buy one and fix it the way they want to. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com (http://www.ClassicHeartbeat.com)

I am just wondering what everyone else's opinion is. I would have a hard time with most F##d motors...but a cammer...I would be banned from here.
I would love to do the caddy 500, and if I am ever able to, I will.
And by the way...good move on the frame and keeping the old one, only thing is, what are the odds of restoring (to tyhe true extent of the word) an inline panel? However, very good thinking if you really think you might do it.

Well I guess I feel these trucks are all about having fun and they are a big break away from the every day grind. So if you can't make it what you want and have fun doing it, then whats the point of owning them. Some people have fun restoring vehicles back to the bone stock condition and thats allright, but for others they wouldn't enjoy the truck if it were that way. (I know I wouldn't) Some people do things to put "Their" signature on their truck and thats OK too. Then there are guys that have this vision of their perfect vehicle and go to great lengths to achive it (me) and thats allright too! So I guess I believe there is no right, or wrong as long as you enjoy what you are doing with your truck. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com (http://www.ClassicHeartbeat.com)
Back in high school, for a school project I built a 1970 C-20 from the ground up. Because I wasn't yet done with building the motor for the truck, I stuck a "spare" 383 Chrysler and 727 transmission in it so I could get the project rolling in time for my grade. It was fun, but it was a pretty big hack of an install. Eventually I yanked the Chrysler out and popped a 350/400 combo in its place. Phew...

BTW, I've been toying with ideas on what to drop into my truck. It's going to be a while before it gets anything but a water pump (that's this weekend). But I've got a couple of ideas that have been tickling my fancy...
1) the classic 540 (or 630) big block stump puller
or...
2) a Mitsubishi 2.0 litre turbo motor. And before you guys start scratching your heads, I'm a Mitsu turbo guy from way back. These engines have plenty of torque to move a 3800# truck just fine, and the motors just love airflow so a fat turbo is the first thing that goes on. Here's some info (http://www.angelfire.com/on/xxl) on my last such hotrod.
I think the turbo engine would be a fun diversion, and there are a couple of guys out there making adapters for Powerglides for them :-)

Sounds...interesting.
You considered putting a turbo on a small block?
Although...an import motor in classic iron, not something you see every day.

I'm just not a small block kind of guy, but I wouldn't be opposed to doing a turbo on a big block. Only problem is getting enough airflow into a 632 will likely mean a pair of smaller turbos instead of one big one. While this is nice for spooling up faster, it's also a much more complicated setup to get right.
All of this is just a bit less than a pipe dream right now, since I've got a looooonnnnggg way to go on the body before I want to start spending money on a motor. http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/frown.gif

They were talking about that engine on Hot Rod TV last year. Now, what division was he running in. That would be sweet. I thought about a dual turbo setup on my truck, but I think I will stick to the traditional roots blower for now.

I grew up as a mopar man. Really felt that the 69 Dodge Superbee that I had as an 18 year old was from the best muscle car builder in the industry. However, now I have fallen in love with the 67 - 72 Chevy pickups. However, I will share a story from my mopar past. A parts store in the late 60's had a world champion SS/A 65 Dodge Staion Wagon called the 1st Supply Wagon. The driver was a brother to the parts store manager at the closest 1st Supply store to where I lived. When in there, we would always share Mopar Muscle car stories. One day, his partner at the store said, "I'm going to have to build a F**D muscle car to show you guys a true muscle car" I said, "You mean like the Blue Max?"(That was a Mach 1 funny car back then). He said, "Yeah, that's it!" To which I responded, "Are you going to put a 426 Hemi, like the Blue Max runs????" Needless to say, he quit trying to talk f**d and muscle car in the same sentence. As for me, I would rather push my Chevy than be caught dead in a f**d!

Speaking of Chrysler transfusions... A buddy of my dad's has a 71'
He also has the remains of a 2001 ram that had the cab crushed by a tree.
Talk about the perfect combo.
Cummins Turbo Diesel, automatic tranmission... Dana 60's front the dodge front and rear... And a 71' body.

Like the little sticker under the hood says keep your GM truck all GM. I'm not a fan of cross breeding if I had a cool mustang, or 56 F-100 I would keep them FORD. Just as I would leave a Dart Swinger all Chrysler. All I'm saying is ride for the brand and keep it all American. But allways remember opinions are like A**holes all of us have one.
I don't know Junkman... if somebody likes green stripes and pink polka dots, they should start a-paintin'

All you need is the mounts and pullies for any big block chevy. They came with big blocks, so it should be a simple swap.

I just found this board awhile ago and have been reading alot of interesting posts. When I saw this one, I had to register and add my 2 cents!
From my user name, you may think that I am lost. I may be, but you decide.
I recently acquired a '72 Cheyenne LWB as a work truck. When I bought it, it was only firing on 6 of 8 and had been sitting for awhile. It has later model heads, HEI, PS/PB/AC/AT. After I got it home and was doing some "tune-up" work, I discovered that the AT is a 700R4. What a deal! I have a few items to complete on the tune-up, such as Q-Jet rebuild, water pump, fan clutch and hoses. I have reassembled most of the interior and am close to roadworthy. That is why I am here.
Now for the "rest of the story." My other project is a '56 F-100. Now before you run me off for owning one of Henry's products, let me explain. When I bought the truck, I also bought a '77 Camaro and used the front clip, engine, transmission (350/350), posi rear, radiator, steering column and wire harness. I added rear disc brakes from an '81 T/A and used part of the tail lights from a '67 Firebird. The driveshaft from an Olds, so the entire driveline is GM.
I have shaved the emblems and door handles and am working on a smooth tailgate, since I don't want anyone to know I am driving a F**D! It also has a gas door from a Chrysler mini-van that was added when I relocated the gas tank outside of the cab.
The way I see it, I have my truck, the way I want it, and best of all, I can say I built it myself. I once had a wise man at a swap meet tell me, "If you don't like it, build your own!" He made me mad at the moment, but I think he was right.
Build 'em, drive 'em, rebuild 'em and drive 'em some more!
Thanks for a great information source for my newest project. Who knows, after my Cheyenne is done chasing parts, maybe I'll "restrofy" it!
