I'm looking for that year style truck to build up. Would like something close to me so I don't have to drive too far. I live in Western Kentucky and wouldn't mind driving about 4 hours away or so to get it. Also, would like motor with it, but I'm open minded. Thanks, Darren

What exactly are you looking for? You want a short/fleet, short/step...a long bed, (please don't say a long step...they just don't look right) How about a Longhorn? 2 wheel drive, 4X4...stock, modified....
I would like to say to try and look south, and not up here in the northern rust states that are 4 hrs from you. (i'm in Ohio) These things disolve to nothing up here.
Also, what is your price range? I spoke to a man here in Columbus who is trying to desperatly unlaod a couplke total turds...the only thing that was salvagable was the frame and some of the running gear. The price was right, but even as parts trucks, there was nothign there worth having.
I told him to call a junk yard. This idiot actually stopped me in traffic to tell me this. (my rig is fairly clean for Ohio daily driver standards)
Give us a little more info, and I know I'll be more than happy to keep an eye open.
There is a 3/4 ton '72 GMC for sale locally, but it falls into an OK beater catagory.

Okay, here it goes. Would like a short bed, 2 wheel drive fleet side bed looking around $1,000-$2500 maybe. I would like to find one that is halfway decent and driveable. I'll be re-painting, lowering, wheels, so I'm looking for something cheap but not too cheap, if you know what I mean. Thanks

Hmmm, I plan on sellin mine in the kinda near fuuture...it is a beater, and needs work, but it is almost as reliable as gravity, and has a mean little small block in her...
If you are slightly interested, I can shoot you some pics one day...keep en eye on all the longhorn updates I have been posting, the closer it is to being on the road, the sooner I'll be selling my GMC. (although, it'll have a '69 Chevy grill on it by then)
You can see some of it on my GMC site...link is in my signiture.

Ok, you gotta explain yourself. http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/confused.gif Give me some insight. What's wrong with the first one and what did you see and where on the second? Remember, I'm a rookie. http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/smile.gif

Ok, I wouldn't touch the first one because...
1.There is no picture.
2.He bought it in peices.
3.He is selling it in peices.
4.And the description is not very good.
The sencond one looks great, but I don't see the short cuts that Andy sees. It looks to be a nice truck, but....I bet his reserve is high.

OK, my mistak, i really shoulda explained my self instead of leavin you hanging like that.
Jason hit the nail on the head on the first one. Plus, why would you be willing to take a $2000 hit right off the bat? He found somethign terribly wrong with his parts pile, andhe is bailing, just like the last owner of the parts.
As for the second one...
If you look through the pictures, you'll probably agree with what I have to say.
The first pic;

After seing an awsome looking truck, I notce it is in front of a dealer of sorts. I never trust dealers. I know they are not ALL evli, but when was the last time you had a warm fuzzy feeling about the dealer that sold you your last car? Also, this truck should sell it'ss elf. It is just a few miles from a major city, so I'm willin to bet it is listed in the local thrifty nickle or auto trader..including the St Louis area. These puplications are about the cheapest way to get the target audiance.

Ok, I love stepsides, and the paint and body seem great on this one. I'm not a huge fan of those tailights, but that is just one man's opionion. the back looks very sharp.

Now is the fine detail things, and the pics I am posting are kinda big, but if you go to the auction, you can super-size the pics and see the same thing. I am not chainging anything on these pics, and e-bay is actually the host for me posting the pictures.
Look at the steering column. If you look at the bottom side of it, you will see the clip-on wire channel cover, just like it is supposed to have. However, if you look at the turn signal switch (cruise control) you'll see it is off of something from the '80's. I have been in both newer and old columns, and don't know how the heck he did this without some duct tape and bailing wire. Maybe he did get it and in a proper maner, but if you been in these columns, you'll know there is no real way of doing this. Also notice, the doors are from a '72...which while there is nothing too wrong with that, it makes me wonder how much of this rig is pieces-parts from other vehicles. (I'm not nieve, I know you need parts from other trucks...but a top dollar rig should have original major parts) Also, if you look at the seat, it is out of an '88 - 90-something chevy...very popular upgrade, but they didn't even bother to put a couple washers under the center legs to level it. I have done this mod in a '69 GMC, and it is simple...remove old seat, toss in new seat, punch holes in floor, place shims/washers in and bolt down. If he took short cuts on that simple of an item...what else is he hiding?
Again, I know it is big, but I was looking real close to get the details)
http://ebay1.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_EBAY_ec226540770792aa3c96b6a037007e16/i-5_B_L.JPG
And under hood...
First thing I see is nice paint, a new heater box, and fresh paint on the engine.
If you look on the valve cover, you'll see a breather missing...5 bucks woulda have gotten one. A PVC valve wopuld have been even better, and cheaper. Now it'll probably puke oil all over the place before the new owner gets 100 miles from the dealer. If you look at the battery, you'll see the wireing harness sticking up a little...it is covered in the plastic looms, I think he is hiding some mickey mouse wireing in there. If you look back by the fuse box, the harness is in the original style black tape. If he was using looms to clean up the aperance of the truck, he should have placed the looms up there where the harness is plain as day, and tucked the harness by the battery down and tucked un like it should be. Also, Univesal parts (like the upper rad hose) bug me, along with a wet radiater. Another thing, I don't see the cruise control actuating piece up on the fire wall...I wonder how he has that RIGGED up.

Also, anyone who claimes to be selling a 33 year old truck in the mid-west that is rust free is probably blowing smoke. If it was a cali truck or better yet, and arizona rig, it would be said since we all know there is no such thing as rust in the south west corner of the lower 50.
I may well be way off base, and honestly hope I am, but I see too many things saying to stay away from this truck. It is just a polished turd IMO. It may well be a 50,000 mile perfect all steel body with just a couple things to be ready to rock and roll...but I think it would sell its self locally if that was the case, and they would not need the internet to dump it on some one.

I gotta back up longhorn on this one. While it may be a good truck there are several things that make you wonder. The one I notice is the seeming rust on the chrome plate at the front of the driver's side door. Those things don't rust all that easy. I'd be all over it looking for rust, or the quality of the work that replaced the rust.
I guess my other thought is that if you want to build one that you like, look for one that is pre-restoration. Otherwise you pay for someone else's tastes. To pay for a restoration and then change it to suit you is an expensive proposition.

Yeah, thanks guys. I've found one locally that the guy said he would sell for $1,000 but it needs work, which is expected. He does have like $500 in parts like new tie rod ends, ball joints, rear brakes, calipers, chrome axle cover, and a few other parts. Plus he has painted the frame. Rust at the usual parts like rockers and dent in the rear bed. Although he does have a 55 Chevy step side with 350, 4 link in rear, and a few other goodies plus the body is pretty straight for about $5,000? Any takers on this one? He said it runs good and just throw some primer on it and it wouldn't look bad.

$1000 with a rebuilt front end, painted chassis and good brakes...if it is daily driver-able, then it sounds like a deal to me.
I paid $900 for my first one and dragged it home, $1000 for the GMC, and it should have been dragged home, and the latest addiction was dragged 400-some odd miles and cost $600.

One thing that I hate is someone using the word MINT. Mint is a very very rare thing. Maybe the words very solid could be used in this case. But not mint!

Bummer....reserve not met.
