I got an e-mail from Yahoo the other day, I'm wondering if anyone else has gotten this. My Longhorn site has been up since '99, I am just now getting a nasty gram on it. I only have 2400 and some change on that site in 3 yrs...the GMC site has 1100 in a couple months and they ain't sayin nothin bout it yet! ???????????????????

Here's the message.
---------------------------------------------
Dear GeoCities Member:

Congratulations, Your site is
very popular and has been receiving a large amount of traffic. Your
site has become so popular, in fact, that our records indicate that
you're using more than the allotted amount of data transfer we provide
for a free web site, which is 3GB/month (measured on an hourly basis).

In the past we have not enforced that limit, so your site has been
uneffected thus far. However, shortly, all free member sites
transferring more than the allowable data limit will be disabled
for portions of the day until usage falls to within the prescribed
limits.

If you'd like to prevent this from happening to your site, you
may join one of our new premium services, GeoCities Pro or GeoCities
Webmaster. These packages allow for 10 GB and 20 GB of data transfer
respectively, and also give you the option of purchasing unlimited
data transfer so your site will never be disabled. These packages also
enable you to run an ad-free site at your own domain name (for example, www.your-dot-com.com) (http://www.your-dot-com.com)) AND get matching email accounts at
that domain (like you@your-dot-com.com).

For more information about our new packages, please visit http://geocities.yahoo.com/ps/info?.refer=bwe. Upgrading your current
GeoCities site to one of our new premium packages is easy - just a few
clicks away - and you don't have to move any of your files.

If you'd prefer not to receive notification when your site is shut
down for going over the transfer limit, you may visit http://geocities.yahoo.com/opt/bwemail?.refer=bwe to take your name
off of our list. Of course, we will continue to monitor your site's
data usage and turn it off if it exceeds the limits.

Thank you,

Yahoo! GeoCities http://geocities.yahoo.com/

Ouch!

First, it sounds like you're using a LOT of bandwidth. EVERYBODY, stay away from Longhorn Man's site for a few weeks.

Second, what have you got posted there? Lots of pics? If so, you might consider posting very small thumbnails of each pic and offering the full size pics as ZIP files. This will reduce the bandwidth. Remember, every visitor who clicks to see one of those pics adds to your bandwidth.

I hope this helps.

Kenneth

I notice that Wes already has a link page. What would be kinda nice, (if his server could handle it) would be for him to host members websites. If there was a membership dues enacted, part of them could help pay for the maintenance.

Just an idea.

Woah....some one has been doing some digging in the archives huh? http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/wink.gif
ksucatz, i just brought this up becouse I saw your question, and I can answer it from personal experiance.
I had listed about 70 sited from board members on another high traffic board. It turned out to be sucj a headache that I deleted that whole page and said forget it.
I was getting e-mails from ppl looking at my site, and they were tellin me that there were bad links to get to the sites, then some ppl had the nads to complain to me about a site that I had linked them to.
Not worth it. Way too much upkeep.

Andy, if you ever have problems again, I can host your site on my server. And get this, NO POP UPS!

Actually chris, I been thinking bout paying Yahoo for some space now that I have a regular pay check.
I can get my own domain, e-mail accounts, and no pop ups. Plus, i don't have to depend on someone else...seen sites go away without the web master know...becouse his friend lost his server.
Thanks though Chris...I do apreciate it.

Is it dummy proof? The only thing I know about html is how to spell it...and I even goof that one up from time to time.

Is what dummy proof? It is really not that impressive. There is not much difference between a server and the computer you are using right now. The main thing is a static IP and a decent continuous connection.

I'm refering to the HTML codes mostly. Geo-Cities and freeservers all make it fool proof to where I can have some good looking sites with color and fonts and all that jaz with out knowing a lick of HTML.
