ok modifiers...my alt. went out and i purchased a newer alt to put on her. it has a post marked bat. which i assume goes to the battery and a post which i assume is a ground. it also has a two prong plug on top of it... the question is do i have to hook anything up to these two prongs? by the way Wes, I found a local supplier in Flatwoods KY and went out to get some knobs and he himself has his own Frankenstein. He has cut down a 68 burb behind the rear seat, put the back of a pick-up cab on it, a long wheel base fleetside bed with stepside fenders and is setting on a 73 one ton dually frame. when he gets it done it will be his tow vehicle for his parts trailer that he works out of at swap meets. its going to be one wild ride.im glad to get back on...i got stuck on midnights and its taken awhile to get my sleep straightened out...glad to see everyone still out there and kickin'....Anthony

Anthony,
If it is really a "one wire alternator," the only wire you need to hook up is from the "batt" post to the battery(+). http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/smile.gif (The other two terminals are typically covered by a dust cap on a one wire alternator.)
However, you did say you bought a "newer alternator," which could mean one with an internal voltage regulator. The GM 10SI looks very similar to the alternator that came on my truck. If this is the case, at least one of these terminals will have to be hooked up as it is +12 volts for field excitation. (switched through the ignition switch) The other terminal is for the alternator idiot light. http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/confused.gif

Hope this helps, http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/cool.gif

It sounds like an internally regulated alternator to me also. We have a conversion harness available for that if you are wanting to convert. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com (http://www.ClassicHeartbeat.com)

thanks guys...i believe you are right...its hard to do this stuff when you dont know exactly what you are looking for...is the conversion harness expensive Wes? you can e-mail me a price if you like.the ole girls coming around. i put a new timing chain on her and had the valves adjusted just to find out the #1 exhaust lobe on the cam is wore. looks like another job, another time...it is definately a labor of love!!!

Okay, now I'm confused. I mistook the one-wire alternator setup to be for an internally regulated alternator.

So an externally regulated alternator can be setup to be one-wire?

What does that change about the system?

Just to get the internally regulated alternator harness by itself is pretty cheap, but if your choose to replace the entire front headlight harness those are a little expencive. You can get those with the conversion already done to them though. Here is a link where you will find all of the wiring I carry for these trucks.
