I am interested in the inline 6 engine but I know very little about them. I am at the point of needing a replacement engine for my '72 1-ton .I use it for a daily driver work truck.I have a 350 in it right now ,which is very tired. I have heard from some old timers that the inline 6 is the only way to go for a truck engine because of it's good low end torque and fuel economy.Does anyone know where I can find reliable info about the inline 6, such as, engine geometry,(stroke, rod length, bore) , and are there high performance parts available, etc... thank you.

Inlines are great motors. They last forever and they do have good low end torque, but in all reality, they get booring on the open road and the gas mileage is quite often as crappy as your old ragged out small block.
Like any engine, they can be made more powerfull and more efficient...both on the same engine if you play your cards right, but the cost of such parts will make you miss your small block.
Myself, I would look for a fresh small block, either 350 or 400 for your one ton.
By the way...would that one ton happen to be a fleetside? If so, are you aware it is one of 2450 built? http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/wink.gif

I have owned since new an 81 GMC 3/4 ton with the 292 inline six, 4 speed manual trans. The best thing about this engine is it has been sooo reliable and easy to maintain. However, it lacks the power needed for a 3/4 ton truck (pulling or hauling) and so I drive in the slow lane with the engine wound tight (4.86 gear ratio); while everyone else passes by. The mileage has always been miserable too....about 11-12 mpg city or hiway....with a 1 bbl carb too. I am currently considering either swapping for a 350 small block or just rebuilding the 292...which is why I was checking this site. I have had several sixes, 230's and 250's in trucks and cars...they are all reliable, but also marginal performers when you need power. Good luck
