Tall or short?
The motor has been torn down, bored out, rebuilt and painted. I don't want to use the old dented and possibly warped valve covers. And I don't want to put chrome covers on it.
Which would you use?

The only reason I know of to use tall is if you are going to use roller rockers. If you want a good looking set of covers check out the GM performance catalog. They have a beautiful set from GM. I am thinking of getting a tall set in the spring maybe. They are a bit expensive. The tall are around $200 and, for reasons unknown to me, the short are $100 more or about 300. Saw them in Hot Rod magazine I think.

Hmmm, well I was having trouble locating some so I went to O'Reilly's. Ordered them on Saturday, had to wait until Tuesday to get them. They were chrome. Sent 'em back. Went down Wednesday to get the replacements and they were the tall ones, and they only had one hole in each one. So, now I'm deciding, keep them and get a custom breather or send them back again and find stock ones and use the stock breather.
I'm using the original rockers with Z28 springs so I don't need the tall ones. And I think I'd just rather have short covers.
As far as the price of those covers. They seem a bit steep. The chrome ones I sent back were only about $42 a pair and the tall ones (powder coated Chevy orange) were $50 a pair.

One hole in each cover...isn't that how they are supposed to be? Or is that just on the 70 and older?

No, I need one for the breather, one for the PCV valve and one for the oil fill tube.

I had problems running tall ones on mine had to get a longer belt. Can't run them with the stock belt it won't let alt. roll back far enough to roll the belt on.Then I couldn't find the right top bracket so I put the original covers back on.
