Hey all got a question. Been tearing my truck apart and finding all kinds of unsuspected things. So far it's got a 67 cab, 70 fenders, 73 or later box, and I tore into the front end and it has disk brakes. My question is where on the frame is the serial number stamped and should it be the same as the VIN. The truck is a long wheel base and I have another short box frame that I want to put the cab on but the SWB frame has drum brakes in front. If I can figure out what year the LWB frame is and it is not a 67 I will just change out front ends. Besides I need something to keep me busy during the great Iowa winter. and info would be great thanks in advance.

Under the hood, drivers side where the steering column meets the gear box. Between the brake lines and the A-arm. There is another farther on back on the same side, but you may need to remove the cab to see it.

Well one way to tell if your frame is a 67 or not is to measure the width of the top of of it next to where the motor mount towers set. In 67 the width is 2 1/2" and in 68-72 it is 1 1/2". They were narower to allow for big blocks that were not offered in 67. For your information... You might check the location of the brackets for the steel front brake lines. If there is a set of brackets on the front of the crossmember then it's a 71-72 crossmember and if the brackets are on the rear of the crossmember it is 67-70. If the lower "A" arm has what looks like large round washers with a rubber bushing between them you have a 73 or lator crossmember. I hope I didn't confuse you...LOL Because I almost did me typing it...Hahaha!!! WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com (http://www.ClassicHeartbeat.com)

there is a serial number stamped on top of the frame rail right in front of the break lines or look for where the steering column bolts to the gear box and your lookin at it and it should match the one found in the cab door sill and the glove compartment box oh its not to hard to put the spindles on the 67 frame i just finished that task myself it was a peice of cake i can tell you this if you go that route which i would make sure to get ball joints for a 72 cause the ball joints for drum breaks are shorter and also i ended up useing 67 inner tierod ends and 72 outters for the spindles of course have fun

Hey thanks guys the frame measures just a little over an 1 1/2 by the motor mount towers so it will take a big block or maybe a caddy motor (yea longhorn I have been studying your page). The next ??'s I have is about the VIN on the cab it is CE147J110275 w/ DD stamped under it. What does the DD mean on the ID tag? Also the number stamped on the frame (right where you said it should be is 71J610760 and the brake lines run along the back of the cross member.

All of the brake lines from 67-72 run on the back side of the crossmember. Where the difference is, is where the ends of the front brake, brake lines are. There should be brackets on each end of the crossmember where the hard lines meet the rubber lines. 67-70 they are on the rear of the crossmember and 71-72 they are on the front. 73 and later they are not even ran on that crossmember, they are ran across the verry front one that is kind of shaped like a V, and the disk brake proportioning valve is mounted there also for the 73 and later years. Anyway you do not have a 67 frame, your frame is 68 or later, because of the notches that are in it for the big block. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com (http://www.ClassicHeartbeat.com)

I can't wait to get the caddy swap done...you have no idea how bad I want to post a pic of the smoke rolling off the rear tires. http://classicheartbeat.com.westserver.net/ubb/wink.gif
As for that VIN, hillbilly got most of it right...all except the 110275 part.
For some reason, Chevy put a 1 in front of there production numbers. THe very first truck would have sais 100001.
So the 110275 on yours actually means it was the 10275th built.
