OK, Ive got a 68 4 x 4 in need of an eng. I have 78 3/4 axles underneath her. I can get my hands on a nice 73 caddy engine really cheap. My question is, am I asking for trouble....

Find a post by longhorn. He's in the middle of this now, and has a site where you can learn all about his work.

On a 2 wheel drive, it is not too hard, just time consuming to get it 'right'.
On a 4X4, there are many other things to look at, and I don't know jack about the 4X4 trucks.
Here is a site on a Caddy into 4X4 site. Granted, it is a 73 - 87 truck, but combine that with some of my notes, and you may be able to make a bit of an educaded decision. http://www.geocities.com/bigblockman472/VictimizerRacing_78Chevrollac.html
