Could someone explain the Dana axle? The rear end on my '72 3/4 ton is 10 bolt. This is the Dana 60, no? I see the front axle on 4x4's is sometimes a Dana also. Thanks.....

dana rearends have that shape like the picture and the difference is the other rear end has a round cover on the back of a rear end

Yes Longhorn, it's exactly like that( but mine doesn't have that little puddle underneath, hee hee). So what's the story behind this axle? Heavier duty, better design, etc.? Also, is the gear ratio stamped somewhere on it? Chevy manual says there is usually a tag on these rearends with the ratio on it. I don't have that. Thanks for the pic by the way. Ron

Danas are awsome. Nuf said
More selections on ratios.
Still in use on new vehicles...more parts avalability
Just awsome stuff. I wish i had one under my one ton.
As for a tag stating gear ratio...never heard of that on a GM...besides, 30+ years later, your lucky it still has oil in it. THe rear diff is THE most ignored fluid.

Chumly, Yes there is a tag on most danas, however after 30+ years that is not always the case... My 72 Suburban (well actually now, my 67 chevy truck!! Hehe) has a dana 60 that either someone had removed it servicing it or it never came with one from the factory. All of the other dana 60s I have had in here have had tags though. Very interesting Wes, I've only heard of Ford doing that.
Thanks!

All dana 60 rears originally had a rtio tag affixed to a cover bolt, dana in general, mnufacturerer they were built for did not affect tag attachment, ratio tag usally affixed to 6 or 7 o clock position cover bolt

wil have tooth count and ratio stamped on it
