View Full Version : Pitman box resealing?

I've finally decided to get the power steering up and going on my '69 1/2 ton. I am going to take an extra pitman gear box that I have, put new seals in it, and then install it on my '69. This is the one that I picked up for the '71 that I hope to begin restoration of this spring. At any rate, I can;t find any instructions for doing this. The only thing that I have in my repair manual is to pull the pitman box and then reinstall it--it doesn't tell me how to pull it apart to reseal it. Does any one know of a place where I can get detailed instructions for resealing the pirman box? Or can anyone walk me through it? Any assistance will be muchly appreciated.
Thanks, Griff--a beat up 69 work truck and a hopeful 71 restore.

If your only going to replace the pitman shaft seals on a power steering box, I have always done them when the box is on the vehicle by removing the pitman arm then the retaining snap ring, now put a large catch pan under the box and start vehicle and turn the steering wheel in one direction all the way till it stops then hold pressure (dead-head) this will push out the old seals.

Thanks Gordo for the advice. I really don't want to shut my 69 down for a little while, though, so I will tryt this one on the extra pitman box that I have. I wish my dad was younger. After 78 years and a quintuple bypass, he can't remember how he did it years ago. Well, I'll find out soon enough. Once again, thanks Gordo.
