Tell me about the engines you're running. I'm trying to decide what to run in my '72 GMC LWB. I've got the stock 350 which is rebuildable. Could go crate engine. The mechanic I work with wants to order an engine out of a supply company that rebuilds them with a 10:1 compression ratio, etc.
I worry that that ratio won't be as streetable as my putting around town, or running 100 miles to the nearest city of any size (and that ain't much) demands.
What is everyone else running and how do you like it?
Freinds shouldn't let Friends drive anything but a BIG BLOCK!! Hahahaha.. Buy the way a customer of mine has a mildly built up 396 for sale. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com (http://www.ClassicHeartbeat.com)

Personally I would not go with 10 to 1 compression in a small block for the street,(At least around here the gas is to crappy)You can get away with it on a big block,
I have BIG BLOCKS in everything,I figure that you will get 10-14 mpg with either a small block or a big block, So I opt for CUBIC INCHES.
68 3/4 Ton 4X4. 454 bored .060, Keith Black pistons,4 bolt main, Steel Crank, Micro port heads with 2.19" stainless valves, performer camshaft, performer intake, Edlebrock Q-jet carb, HEI ignition, Doug Thorley tri-Y headers with 3" exhaust, It will pull a house!! It is also fun to "play" with the Camaros and Mustangs with an old 5800lb 4X4. 10 MPG
71 Suburban 1/2 4X4 454cu, performer intake, HEI, Doug Thorley tri-Y headers, w/2 1/2 inch exhaust, 14MPG
70 GMC 1ton dually Motorhome, 396cu t-400 all stock,
The only substitute for Cubic inches is more cubic inches!!
But again this is all just my opinion...

Tell me more about the 396. My only hesitation with going big block is the question of whether my current suspension would support the weight. Then again, I can't imagine a 396 being that much heavier than a 350. (am I nieve there or what?)
Tell me more about hte 396.
Livrat, thanks for confirming my opinion on the 10:1 compression. I think mild is the way I should go.

I'll tell ya what I know. BB take diffrent springs than a SB. All front suspension parts are the same.

I agree with racedvl, the suspension is all the same just the spring rate is different, Big blocks do weigh more than the small blocks.
I do have a 454 for sale, 1985 vintage, runs great, but comes attached to a 35ft school bus, drive it home.
If you want to really go nuts, I have a 1969 corvette Service replacement 427 that has less than 500 miles on it since 69.
But it needs AV-Gas to run. (12.5 compression),

If you just wanting to do a little crusing get you a Scoggins Dicky catalog and order a GM Performance Parts SMALL BLOCK some have 3 year 50,000 mile warranties and they have all new parts.

Junkman,
I looked at Scoggins Dickey. Some great stuff. You bring up the point I ask myself. The original engine is great, why mess with a great package. However, I want to compare the original engine with those on Scoggins Dickey.
Any ideas what the cam, head specifications were on the original 350 in a '72? How about horsepower, torque, etc?
I guess it's stuff I always wanted to know, just began to realize what I didn't know about what was there.
Thanks

So, I looked at Scoggins Dickey. The basic stock crate engine is an 8.5 to 1 ratio. Anyone know how that compares to the original engine? The reality is I love the reliability of the original engine,it's a great cruiser and with a 3.73 rearend, it's a great highway truck, too.
